He is me, a
am still kicking, wow once again i am overwhelmed by study in my university.
My thoughts
about Linux desktop current situation:
I never
thought to write this, but what a hell.
Most company’s
who develop Linux do not care that desktop Linux will develop quality of
Windows Desktop.
I must use
windows for my study and probably possible work, this just not acceptable.
As I stated
many years ago, we need another third major Linux distribution who will have
only one goal both financial and development goal to take what it means to
develop quality desktop for Linux.
What I mean
by that:
User should
be able easy to install application like in windows
User should
be able to download and install all proprietary drivers for his hardware and
use hardware exactly as he would in windows. Oh yes, FUCK YOU LINUS TORVALDS
for not working with Nvidia and always changing the kernel interfaces!!!!
User should
have common applications which will be easy to use.
I know that proprietary drivers are bad and can
have some malicious code, but what the
HELL I want to use the hardware which must work in windows and Linux, this is
in my opinion real freedom.
User expect
that you can get or buy software for different kind of work, look at Linux
market of apps, it so tiny!
Most common
sense people saying to me, what about preinstalled laptop and pc with Windows,
oh yeah fuck that, If I had company who is interested in this market, I would
contact the Vendor and ask him how much money he wants for preinstalling my
system and this it. MS have a lot of bucks for doing this. So what the problem
man?
I am all about simple user experience, if we
can't provide it as windows people do it, than we have already failed and it’s
only time when big business says : oh no we can afford such cumbersome system
for our office workers. Yes Linux probably stay forever on server side, but I personally
don’t give a fuck about such systems, even if they bring a buck.
I simple not interested in such systems. Even
more I concerned that if current Linux developers both on gui and kernel side
wont work together on one goal as Linux Desktop, that we just as users screwed
up forever!
My approach
would be different,
- Create community supported Distribution with monthly donation system from 5 to 50 bucks !
- create non profit organisation with dedicated core developers and project manager mostly selfemployed for the start, probably halftime or full time if somebody had already money for living this works best.
- create alpha state distribution, kde only and only tested for x86_64 modern home user computers
- open Beta testing and voting system for donators for core features
- contact major hardware vendors, and establish some sort of business relation probably get some opinion about problems with Linux drivers
- Publicly declare a war against Microsoft, that’s means we are thinking that our distribution is best operating system for home user , even better than MacOS or Windows.
- Get Richard Stallman to promote the distribution, because basically we will develop GNU/GPL System yes with proprietary/additions, but this would be only to provide a choice for user, so if for some reason user decide not to use the proprietary driver than so be it , because than he would have the freedom of choice.
And how it
will work you ask?
Sincerely, i
do not know , but I am pretty sure that more people would be interested to
participate in this project, from Reasons : hatred for Microsoft, hatred for
other distributions who see users as beta Tester for commercial Linux products,
wish to have rock stable Linux Desktop Distribution with developers who
actually care about user experience with their OS.
Financially
this will work, only if people would understand goals to support trough
donation the core developers and managers of the project. Myself I would view
as kind of major architect of this distribution and major decision maker for
important features.
Overall it
would be difficult to control, more
things would depend as community vote.
Why monthly
donation?
This is a heavy
question, because if I get money I can find a programmer (selfemployed of
course) with skills who defiantly work on goal which community asked for.
Just
imagine if community rise and vote for opensource 3d game engine, can you
imagine that some real skilled programmer would work only on such project and
not routine work like some bugfixing and report writing for another company. I speak
task and goal oriented distribution , bug fixing is important too, but this
should not stop the major development of distribution.
This is the
reasons why I would decline any salary or payment for my work on this project.
I will be paid , by working with companys
who actually will use my distribution in production environment. Probably i will be responsible for additional features,
which not asked and implemented by the community, but
needed by the company.
So at the
end we have a very fast and test driven Linux distribution who actually don’t depend
on any major Linux corporations and develops as community see it. And the best of this only community major vote decide in which state the distribution in beta or in release state, yes this decision should depend
from users and not from people who develop such distribution!!!!!!!!
I hope you
can see my point, I braking the traditional way of Linux distribution
development, do you want to be on our side when we start kicking I hope so, if
not than be happy that I do not started it yet, because then it will be late and we as community acheave the goal and then you probably will be out of work!!!
